What’s at stake in the fake? Indian pharmaceuticals, African markets, and global health

Decolonizing Global Health: What are the challenges and opportunities of this call? 

Sarah Hodges (King’s College London), expert in the fields of population health and postcolonial history, speaks about her on-going project on the politics of the global pharmaceutical trade.

In this talk, she places the contemporary explosion of worry about potentially urgent and life-threatening dangers posed by fake drugs within a longer history of the politics and place of pharmaceutical fake-ness, as well as of pharmaceutical standards and authenticity.  

In doing so, she shows the potential of a medical humanities approach to explore how concerns about “fake drugs” can take on social, political, and economic lives of their own – lives that go far beyond any pharmacological evidence.
