Lecture by Prof. Dr. Fred Halliday (Barcelona Institute for International Studies)

In his talk Professor Halliday will outline the components of contemporary internationalist ideology, distinguishing between five variants. He will then examine how far the elaboration of an internationalist perspective today can draw on pre-modern models and ideas. Drawing attention to the presence within the Islamic and Ottoman posts of two, conflicting, models of cosmopolitanism, one communitarian, one transnational, Prof. Halliday will assess the obstacles, and possibilities, of transposing pre-democratic forms of identity and coexistence to the contemporary, globalised, world.

Fred Halliday was born in the Republic of Ireland in 1946. He is for the period 2008-2011 ICREA Research Professor at IBEI, the Barcelona Institute for International Studies. From 1985 to 2008 he was Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics. In 2002 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. Professor Halliday has published eighteen books, covering international relations theory, the role of nationalism and revolution in world affairs, and the international relations of the Middle East. Several books have been published in Turkish, Persian and Arabic. His most recent publications are “The Middle East in International Relations” (CUP, 2005) and “100 Myths About the Middle East” (Saqi, 2005). He is currently working on a comparative study of historical and contemporary forms of internationalism and cosmopolitanism, and on a dictionary of  words and terms occasioned by 9/11.

The lecture takes place within the Ottoman Urban Studies
Seminar organized by EUME and ZMO.
